General Information

General Information
Welcome to the MFLHS Explorer Challenge pages. It is hoped that everyone who would like to find out more about researching their family history will be able to learn something from trying out some of the challenges we have planned. You do not have to have ancestors that originated from Manchester, though we have access to more primary information for the Manchester & Lancashire area. You are welcome to get involved with any of the challenges. You may only want to try one or two challenges or you many want to work your way through the different challenge levels. The choice is yours.

Challenges Explained
The Challenges have been set up with approximate age groups considered:

Bronze 8-10 years

Silver 11-13 years

Gold 14 – upwards

This is only a guide. It would be better to progress from Bronze to Silver and onto Gold, especially if you are just starting to put together your family tree. The challenges do increase in difficulty and understanding as you work your way through.

Groups & Organisations
In an attempt to encourage children and young people into family history the Society’s aim is to:
To instil in children & young people an interest in family history & genealogy in general but in particular the Manchester & Lancashire area. To offer guidance, supervision, support, assistance, research strategies and techniques in order to achieve this.

To make available a series of online downloadable worksheets and provide occasional holiday or weekend workshops. Young people can work through a series of activities roughly based on age.
The Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society are happy to organise and offer guidance to:

  • any group or school who would like to participate in a tailor made workshop or series of workshops about Family History.

  • Scout Groups & Girls Guide Companies working towards their ‘Heritage badge’
